On Saturday 26th August and Sunday 27th August Southend United Academy Under 12s/13s travelled to Bourbourg (France) for a tournament.
Other clubs involved included some well known Eurpean clubs such as Stade De Reims, Slavia Prague, Troyes Estac, RC Lens, Lyon, Lille, Le Havre and also West Ham in a 40-team tournament.
On the Saturday the team played four group games in which they played St. Omer, Boulogne, Troyes Estac and Coquilles. The team drew two games and lost two games by the odd goal and their final placing in the group meant that the team was to participate in the Silver Cup on the Sunday. One more point would have seen the team qualify for the Gold Cup.
The Silver Cup was made up of sixteen teams on a knock out basis of the teams that finished third and fourth in their respective groups. Last year’s winners of the Silver Cup in this tournament were Slavia Prague and this showed what a good quality tournament this was.
The team made it all the way to the final after beating Fremad A, US Laon and Marck. The final was a game against French club, RC Lens. The boys lost the final 1-0 which looked like it was heading to a penalty shootout, but with RC Lens scoring the goal within the last minute of the game.
The team produced excellent performances both with and without the ball. It was also very pleasing to see the team play with commitment, a great working ethic and a desire to work hard at trying to do the right things.
Well done to all the players and also a mention and thank you to Scott Allison, Michael March and Jack Wilson for their help during the tour and giving up their free time.
