On This Day...
Southend 1-1 Carlisle
Blues' first season back in Division Two, after relegation from Divsion One, ended with a draw as Carlisle grabbed an equaliser in the second half.
Southend started the first half well with Jeroen Boere scoring in the 25th minute putting Blues in a comfortable position heading into half time.
But in the second half Carlisle were the stronger team and equalised six minutes into the second half, putting Blues under pressure for the rest of the game.
The game seemed to fizzle out after the goal with neither side putting any pressure on the opposition for the rest of the game.
Southend 2-0 Cheltenham
Two goals were all Blues needed to secure a win over Cheltenham Town to start the 03/04 season.
Southend started well in the first half and Mark Gower opened the scoring with a goal in the 33rd minute of the game.
With only one goal in the first half Blues needed to defend well in the second half to secure an opening day win.
Cheltenham pushed in the second half but never threatened the Southend goal and Gower made them pay for it by scoring a penalty on the 90th minute, putting Blues in 5th place on the opening day.
Southend 1-0 Peterborough
Blues kicked off the League One 08/09 season with a 1-0 win over the league's newcomers Peterborough.
Blues dominated the game from the first whistle and Damian Scannel shot just wide early in the game.
Nicky Bailey had a 30-yard shot saved by Joe Lewis but they were the main chances in the first half.
Posh almost opened the scoring when Chris Whelpdale’s cross just missed Craig Mackail-Smith’s outstretched leg.
Southend dealt the newcomers a first defeat on the 76th minute with defender Peter Clarke scoring from Dan Harding’s corner kick.
