On This Day...
Scarborough 1-2 Southend
The first away game of the season saw Blues earn a hard thought victory over Scarborough.
Two second half goals from Simon Coleman and Julian Hails gave Blues the win on the day putting us 9th on the opening day.
Alvin Martin's side went 1-0 down in the 37th minute as Steve Brodie placed the ball in the back of the Southend net.
But Blues came out better in the second half and on the hour mark Simon Coleman struck home a volley, then 17 minutes later Julian Hails pulled off a superb 30 yard strike that dipped under the crossbar and gave Blues in the win.
Tony Richards signed from Barnet
He previously played for Cambridge and Leyton Orient. During his one-year stay with Blues he made 20 appearances, his only two goals with the club were scored in the 4-1 win over Halifax.
Southend 2-2 Huddersfield
Our first game of the 09/10 season saw Blues draw from a 2-0 lead against Huddersfield.
A penalty in the 14th minute was tucked away by Blues striker Lee Barnard and a second half goal from Franck Moussa wasn’t enough to see off traveling Huddersfield who scored twice in under ten minutes to deny Blues an opening day victory.
Possession was even between the two sides but Blues didn’t take their chances when they should have.
Huddersfield came back with a vengeance in the second half and made Blues regret their wasted chances with goals from Anthony Pilkington and Jordan Rhodes, but even a sending off to Michael Collins in the 83rd minute didn't help Blues to get a third goal on the day.
