A look back at some games that occurred on this day in Blues history
1969
Brentford 2-3 Southend
Eddie Clayton’s extra time goal decided the outcome of Blues’ League Cup game against Brentford.
Despite taking the lead, Brentford scored two in two minutes to cancel out Blues’ advantage, but a late equaliser forced extra time.
It wasn’t until the second half of extra time that Ernie Shepherd’s side scored the game’s fifth and winning goal from Clayton.
1999
Southend 1-0 Mansfield
A first half goal from Neil Tolson was all that was needed to secure three points against Mansfield at Roots Hall.
Tolson found the back of the net in the 17th minute which came from quick counter attacking play.
2004
Southend 0-0 Cambridge
The second home game of League Two season ended goalless between Blues and Cambridge at Roots Hall.
The only real goal threat for Southend came from Mark Bentley’s low cross to Wayne Gray who flicked the ball over the bar from close range.
