Southend 1-1 Nottingham Forest
Southend United kicked off the 1993 season with a draw against relegated Nottingham Forest.
Andy Sussex put Blues ahead against the former Premiership side.
But Forest fought back and won a penalty near the end of the first half which Stuart Pearce slotted home
Neither side came close to scoring a second and the game ended all square on the opening day, putting Blues 11th in the table.
Southend 2-1 Shrewsbury
It was three wins in three for the start of the 1998 season for Southend after a 2-1 win over Shrewsbury.
It took just seven minutes for Adrian Clarke to open the scoring which gave Southend the start they wanted in Division Three.
Shrewsbury came back strong after the goal and in the 28th minute forward Austin Berkely slotted home to equalise.
It wasn’t until the last minute of the game that Blues forward Alex Burns scored the winner which gave Southend all three points, putting them third after two league games.
Walsall 2-2 Southend
The first away game in League One ended all square for Blues.
Steve Jones found the net with a header for the hosts but they were down to ten men with Dwayne Mattis seeing red.
Lee Barnard equalised before substitute Dougie Freedman headed Blues into the lead.
However, ref John Moss awarded the home side a penalty in the 90th minute and Sam Parkin stepped up to earn the Saddlers a point.
