Cardiff 1-1 Southend

Blues played Cardiff City in round one of the League Cup and after a first half goal, they looked to be on the way to a victory.

Paul Bryne was the goal scorer for Blues that day with a goal just before half time.

But Jim Rollo scored in the 88th minute to deny Blues the win on the day. The replay ended 3-1 to Blues three weeks later.

2000

Southend 2-0 Brighton

Blues kicked off the new millennial season with a comfortable home win against Brighton.

Forward Martin Carruthers opened the scoring just five minutes after the whistle and that put Blues in a good position for the remainder of the game.

They had to dig deep but Blues gained some breathing space in the 81st minute when David Lee scored.

2006

QPR 2-0 Southend

Blues’ second away game in their return to the Championship ended in defeat after two first half goals.

Southend had just come off a defeat to Crystal Palace on the Tuesday hoping to fight back and earn some points.

The hosts were dominant in the first half and on the 31st minute Martin Rowlands gave QPR their reward by scoring a 25-yard free kick that dipped under the bar.

Ten minutes later Nick Ward scored the second from close range to put Rangers two nil up.
