Hull 2-2 Southend
Blues came from behind twice to earn a hard-fought point against Hull City on the opening day of 2002/03 season.
Second half substitute Tes Bramble proved an astute replacement for Steven Clarke with a 90th minute equaliser after Neil Jenkins had replied to Hull’s early lead.
Southend 3-2 Bristol City (AET)
Blues played Bristol City in the Carling Cup and the winner was decided after extra time.
Ivan Sproule’s 82nd minute goal had looked like sending the Robins through as 2-1 winners, but Barry Corr was on hand with a late goal to force extra time.
The winner came from Matthew Paterson who headed home a left wing Ryan Hall delivery in the 104th minute.
Hartlepool 0-1 Southend
Southend’s first away game in the 2013/14 season led to two wins in two for Phil Brown’s side.
Freddy Eastwood took just five minutes to open the scoring after a poor clearance which gave Will Atkinson the chance to deliver.
Eastwood finished clinically for the game’s only goal, although Barry Corr made life difficult for Blues with a 46th minute red card.
However, they held on to record another 1-0 win in the league.
