FIRST-HALF goals from Ryan Leonard and Michael Kightly saw Southend United start the new League One Season with a 2-1 win against title favourites Blackburn Rovers this afternoon.

The duo were both on target during a dominant opening period from the Shrimpers.

And, despite skipper Charlie Mulgrew netting a fine free-kick in the 53rd minute, Phil Brown’s side held on to secure a hard fought three points.

The Shrimpers opened the new campaign with the most attractive of fixtures, and – ultimately – ran out comfortable winners, with first-half Ryan Leonard and Michael Kightly goals proving sufficient, last Saturday.

First half goals from Ryan Leonard and Michael Kightly put the Shrimpers in control, and although Charlie Mulgrew gave the 1500 travelling supporters a glimmer of hope with an expertly-taken second half free-kick, the home side saw the match out comfortably.

ROVERS started life in League One with a disappointing defeat at Southend United.

Southend led 2-0 at the break in a first-half in which they dominated, with Ryan Leonard and Michael Kightly on the scoresheet.

Rovers threatened a comeback when Charlie Mulgrew curled in a stunning 30 yard free-kick, but unable to build on that momentum, they rarely threatened an equaliser.
