Simon Cox on MK Dons and what the four goals at Chesterfield will do...
Simon Cox believes the confidence from hitting four goals against Chesterfield is just what Southend needed after two defeats on the spin.
Cox struck twice in the win at The Proact Satdium on Good Friday as Blues returned to the form that has taken them to within touching distance of a play-off place.
And with plenty still to play for, Cox said getting three points in a must-win game against Chesterfield in convincing style sets up Easter Monday’s game against MK Dons nicely.
“It’s a game we go into full of confidence off the back of a 4-0 win at Chesterfield," he said.
“We said [before Chesterfield] we didn’t want three defeats on the spin because that would probably have been our campaign done then.
“We came to Chesterfield and did a professional.
“We had to be on the front foot, press high from the front and everyone had to push from behind.
“As soon as a few fouls went our way, we got the penalty and went 1-0 up, the sending off became pivotal because although we were on top anyway, them going down to ten men allowed us to dictate.
“It was nice that the manager was able to bring a couple of players off, rest them and look ahead to Monday because that’s even more important now, so it was nice to not use as much energy as you would normally.”
