REPORT | Scunthorpe United 4-0 Southend UnitedSouthend United fell to a heavy 4-0 defeat at Glanford Park against an in-form Scunthorpe United side in Sky Bet League One.
Phil Brown made just the one change for this one, with Jakub Sokolik coming in for the injured Anton Ferdinand in a 5-3-2 formation.
Blues nearly found themselves in front early doors as skipper Barrett’s header was denied superbly by Daniels to his right after White’s cross on 3 minutes.
Adam King was next to try his luck on 9 minutes, running into space after some nice build-up play from Blues. The midfielder struck one from 20-yards but Daniels comfortably collected.
It was a good start to the game from Southend, controlling much of the early possession and pressuring well when without the ball.
They struggled to stop the trickery of Holmes in the 18th minute though. The midfielder weaved in and out before Smith made a strong save from his left-footed effort to keep the scores level.
The home side were enjoying a spell of pressure just past the 20-minute mark – Wallace hooking one over his shoulder and just past the post after a free-kick was played in.
Just short of the half-hour mark, Mooney appeared to played in by a misplayed pass by Bishop. Daniels pounced off his line quickly to deny Mooney a shooting chance.
After a couple of half chances for Cox, Southend found themselves behind on the 36 minutes, as Madden fired into the left-corner after Holme’s found him with a low cross from the right.
It got worse just over five minutes later as Van Veen slotted in at the near post after Morris found him with the cross – The Iron two-up on at half time.

Blues made three changes at the start of the second half as they switched to a 4-4-2 formation – Coker, McLaughlin and McGlashan replacing Kyprianou, King and Sokolik.
After Madden headed over early on in the second period, Blues looked for a way back as Ryan Leonard fizzed an inviting low cross into the box, though no one could answer the inviting call on 53 minutes.
Scunthorpe gave themselves further breathing space as Sky Bet League One Player of the Month, Morris smashed in a low-drive into the bottom right corner from 20-yards to give the hosts a three-goal advantage.
Scunthorpe looked for a fourth in spectacular fashion with both Dawson and Holmes trying their luck from range – the latter forced the young keeper into a smart save on 69 minutes.
Scunthorpe thought they had a fourth as Madden slotted home after being played in by Wiseman on 72’. The flag was up though and it did not count.
A handful of chances in quick succession presented themselves to the Iron as the caught Blues on the break, both Holmes and Madden denied by last-ditch blocks from the defence.
Holmes then charged into the box from the left, got towards goal and curled it just past the far-post on 78’.
The Iron inflicted futher misery on Blues with a debut goal for Smallwood as he volleyed into the top left corner after Barrett's header fell to him with two left to play.
