MATCH PREVIEW | Leonard previews Oxford United

26 September 2016

Leonard hoping to make it two consecutive home wins...

Ryan Leonard sees the game against Oxford United at Roots Hall on Tuesday night as the perfect opportunity to react quickly to the 4-0 setback against Northampton Town at the weekend.

The midfielder admits inconsistency is proving the issue at the moment for the Blues, who are looking to make it back-to-back home victories following the 3-1 success over Millwall in their last fixture on home turf.

Lenny is hoping the players can put in a similar shift to that of the Lions’ victory to get themselves back on track.

“Saturday wasn’t good enough, especially in the second half.” He said.

“But luckily for us the games are coming are thick and fast and Tuesday night gives us a chance to quickly put it right.

“It’s just inconsistency that is the problem, in the first half on Saturday we did more than enough and we could have gone a goal ahead at one point.

“But in the second half we didn’t come out the blocks at all and before we knew it we were 3-0 down with a man sent off and it was game over from there really.

“We know we need to put that right, we need to bring back what we did against Millwall on Tuesday night and get a win.”

As Southend registered their first win of the season at Roots Hall in impressive style ten days previous to the Oxford fixture, they were loudly cheered on by the home faithful, who will be out in their numbers again on Tuesday night.

And Leonard is hoping for a similar atmosphere this time around to help ensure the Blues get back on the winning trail against the U’s.

“We need the fans for every single game this season and we know that in the last few away games we have let them down.

“We need to give them something to shout about and in the last two away games we haven’t done that.

“But against Millwall we did do that and they showed us what they can do for us, so we need them again on Tuesday night.”
