U21 Boss pleased with first season in Final Third Development LeagueSouthend United Under-21’s Manager, Kevin Maher feels it has been a thoroughly positive first season in the Final Third Development League.
The platform has been a great opportunity for players in the final stage of their development to gain some competitive experience, whilst also providing players on the fringes of the first team some vital game time.
A positive first season was capped off with a Final Third Development South Cup Final victory over Swindon Town last week.
Despite a 1-0 defeat in their final game of the season at home to AFC Wimbledon after a Tom Beere stunner from 35-yards, Maher, who took over the managerial reins in November, was still pleased with how the season had gone overall.
“It’s been a good first year for the club as an under 21 side.” He said.
“We won the cup last week and we’ve had a good season in the league as well which has been pleasing.
“I’ve been here since November and I’ve really enjoyed it.
“It’s been good working with the players and they’ve all worked tirelessly.
“Hopefully we can build on this for next year now, and more of the lads can push on.”
