Goalscorer gives his verdict on Oakwell win.Goal hero Jack Payne is hoping the Blues can build on the impressive 2-0 victory over Barnsley going in to the ‘business end’ of the season.
Payne got the deserved reward for a fantastic start to the game for the Blues, slotting home inside the opening five minutes.
It could so easily have been more, and equally it could have been 1-1 going in to the break as Barnsley had the chance to level from the spot.
Luckily Connor Hourihane sent the spot-kick wide and Michael Timlin put daylight between the sides in second half stoppage time with a stunner from 25-yards.
Speaking after the game, Payne was thrilled that the Blues are now back on track and firmly on the play-off hunt with a massive statement of intent.
“We started off very well.” He said.
“We got the goal straight away which is always good as it takes a bit of pressure off us, so it couldn’t have been a better start to be fair.
“We’ve played great football against a good side who are up and around the play-offs, and that just shows how good we can be on our day. So we’ve just got to make sure we are on our day more often.”
“I had a chance to put us 2-0 up, Tyrone also had a chance but once we were 1-0 up we’re confident because we’ve got a great defence.
“It’s now a great result to build on.”
Southend will now be hoping to follow up today’s result with another three points in the local derby with Gillingham next Saturday at Roots Hall.
Payne, full of praise for the travelling support today, is hoping the Blues fans can get the boys over the line in an exciting match-up on home turf.
“Today’s result is massive because we know once we get a couple of wins we will keep the momentum going and keep the good form going.
“Hopefully the fans which be out in numbers again next week which I’m sure they will be.
“They were very good again today, and I’m now buzzing for that game, and hopefully it will be another win.”
