Opening day fixtures in years gone by

22 June 2016

Ahead of the 2016/17 fixture release on Wednesday 22 June (9:00am) we take a look at Blues' recent opening day results.

Wednesday 22 June will be the day that Blues discover who they will be up against first in the 2016/17 Sky Bet League One season.

As the eve of fixture release is upon us, we decided to have look at some recent opening day results for Blues.

2015/16 – 08/08/15 Sky Bet League One: Fleetwood Town 1-1 Southend United

Southend United returned to life in Sky Bet League One with a deserved point in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Fleetwood Town, who finished 10th the previous season.

Phil Brown handed competitive debuts to summer signings Anthony Wordsworth and David Mooney, while Noel Hunt and Joe Pigott were named on the bench at Highbury Stadium.

Declan McManus sent the hosts ahead in spectacular fashion with a rasping 25-yard drive.

The forward seized upon a header from Cian Bolger before rifling an effort into the top-corner.

Substitute David Worrall came to rescue six minutes before time as he lobbed the goalkeeper.

After an initial effort from Pigott was blocked, the ball broke to Worrall who floated a lob over the head of the helpless Chris Maxwell.

Both sides went in pursuit of a late-winner as the game entered five minutes of added time, but Blues left Highbury Stadium with a valuable opening day point.

2014/15 - 09/08/14 Sky Bet League Two: Accrington Stanley 0-1 Southend United

Substitute Lee Barnard got Southend United’s 2014-15 campaign off to a winning start, as they beat Accrington Stanley 1-0 at the Crown Ground.

Barry Corr’s second-half penalty was saved by Stanley goalkeeper Luke Simpson, but Barnard made no mistake when Blues were awarded another one.

Barnard’s goal came on his 100th appearance for the club and handed Blues all three points to kick-off their season.

There were two debutants in Blues’ line-up with Myles Weston and Shaquile Coulthirst both starting the game, while Cian Bolger made his first appearance following his permanent move from Bolton Wanderers.

David Worrall, Mads Ibenfeldt and Lee Barnard, all of whom joined permanently in the summer, were among the substitutes.

2013/14 – 03/08/13 Sky Bet League Two: Southend United 1-0 Plymouth Argyle

Southend United started off the Sky Bet League Two season with three points after a 1-0 victory against Plymouth Argyle at Roots Hall.

Barry Corr’s first half goal was the difference between the two teams in a tightly contested affair.

After a quiet opening Blues took the lead with the first real chance of the game in the 15th minute after Corr tucked the ball home inside the six-yard box following a superb team move.

Anthony Straker played an excellent through ball to Marc Laird who saw his shot saved under pressure by Luke McCormick before Corr slotted the ball home from close range past a wall of Argyle players on the line.

2012/13 – 18/08/12 Sky Bet League Two: Southend United 0-1 Accrington Stanley

Southend United suffered a 1-0 loss to Accrington Stanley at Roots Hall in the opening match of the 2012/13 League Two season.

After a goalless first half, Karl Sheppard’s looping header on the hour mark was enough to give Accrington all three points in the tight affair giving Paul Cook his first away win in charge of the away side.

Charlie Barnett’s cross caused confusion in the Blues’ penalty box and with Southend failing to clear the ball Sheppard looped his header towards goal which looked a routine save for Cameron Belford who palmed the ball into the back of the net.
