Blues' Under 21 Boss reflects on 2-1 pre-season defeat to Chelmsford City.Southend United’s Under-21’s Manager, Kevin Maher was pleased with how his side competed against a physical Chelmsford City team.
The Blues were defeated 2-1 after Harry Phillips gave Southend the lead in their first pre-season game of the campaign against the National League South outfit.
Despite the result, Maher felt there was much to take from the game.
“It was a good exercise.” He said.
“It was our first Under-21 game of the pre-season and I think the fitness levels the boys showed were very good.
“It was a competitive game against a strong physical side, and I think we stood up to the battle so I’m very pleased with the boys in that respect.
“There is plenty to work on which is good, among a lot of positives as well.
“There’s a good group coming through with some good players who are working on their knowledge of the game and playing senior football so they can progress to the First Team.
“We want to mould them to play how the Manager wants them to play and we want to win games that’s what football is all about for me; learning how to win games and game management.
“So it’s going to be an important year for their development and hopefully we can progress as many players to the First Team as we can so we’re looking forward to the season ahead.”
