PREVIEW | Coker relishing U's test

28 July 2016

Defender previews Blues' pre-season friendly v Colchester United this Saturday at Roots Hall (3pm kick off).

Southend full-back Ben Coker is relishing signing off for pre-season with a local derby over Colchester United.

Saturday’s friendly against the U’s at Roots Hall (3pm kick off) will be the last game Phil Brown’s side will play before the League One season begins a week later against Gillingham at home on Saturday 6 August.

And Coker believes the game against Blues’ neighbours will prove a great test for the team ahead of the big kick off.

“There’s no better way to prepare for the season than a local derby and we’re all looking forward to it.” The defender said.

“Obviously they’re in League Two now but it will still be interesting as they are still a good side.

“Hopefully it will be a good watch for the spectators, but more importantly it will give us chance to get more minutes in our legs.”

Southend have enjoyed a successful pre-season to date winning all but one of their friendly fixtures with some new additions strengthening the camp as well.

After the recent game against a strong Newcastle United side, Coker is expecting a different test against Colchester, and the left-back is confident the game can highlight the technical quality of the Blues.

“Pre-Season never gets easier, but I’ve enjoyed this one.

“It’s been really hard but we’ve had a lot of time to get know all of the new lads, and all the boys have integrated really well so that’s good.

“Newcastle was a good run out for the boys. Obviously we were running more than we had the ball but they are a top quality team with a lot of internationals playing so that’s what you expect.

“Hopefully this Saturday we can get the ball down and show everyone what we can do.”
