Defender previews Essex derby

Southend United defender, Adam Barrett is ready to do battle once more with neighbours Colchester United at Roots Hall this weekend.

The experienced centre-half is preparing to play in his ninth Essex derby against the U’s.

Barrett is expecting a carnival atmosphere from the expected sold-out home support, and is thoroughly looking forward to the game.

“I always look forward to the Colchester games." He said.

“No doubt a little bit of stick from the away fans will come my way.

“It’s a great game to be involved in; I’ve been lucky to be involved in some really good ones over the years.

“We got a great result there on Boxing Day, and you can see what it means to the players and the fans.

“I'm sure Roots Hall is going to be sold out, which is going to be a fantastic atmosphere."

With all the hype surrounding the game, Barrett, who has been the stand in skipper in the absence of the injured John White, has highlighted the importance of not being overawed by the occasion, with three points the most important thing on offer.

“I’m really looking forward to it, but it is just another three points, even though it’s the derby.

“We’ve got to make sure we don’t get caught up in the occasion and prepare properly for it.

“Colchester are down at the bottom, fighting for their lives scrapping with nothing to lose. Games against those types of sides are difficult.

“No matter who you’re playing you can’t underestimate them, you’ve got to show every team respect and they (Colchester) are going to make it difficult for us.

“I’m sure it’s going to be a blood and thunder affair; they’re coming to here to get one over on us after Boxing day.

“It’s going to be tough, so we’re going to have prepare properly, but I do believe that if we do that, we’ve got enough quality in our side to come out on top.”
