A look back at the year that was for Blues in 2016

As the year draws to a close, here's a look back at results for Blues in the 12 months gone.

Southend 0-3 Doncaster Rovers
Swindon Town 4-2 Southend
Peterborough United 0-0 Southend
Southend 3-0 Coventry

After a disappointing start to the year with back-to-back defeats, the month ended much brighter with a point at Peterborough and a home win against Coventry to keep on the tails of the Play-Off places

Shrewsbury Town 1-2 Southend
Southend 3-0 Colchester United
Scunthorpe United 1-0 Southend
Bradford City 2-0 Southend
Southend 3-1 Burton Albion
Port Vale 3-1 Southend

A busy month with six games played saw Blues start well, including a derby day beating of Colchester, but struggle in Yorkshire and then end the month with defeat to Port Vale on a Friday night.

Blues did however beat the league leaders Burton Albion in front of the sky cameras.

Southend 1-1 Crewe Alexandra
Southend 0-1 Chesterfield
Barnsley 0-2 Southend
Southend 1-1 Gillingham
Rochdale 4-1 Southend
Southend 3-1 Sheffield United

Despite starting and ended the month in eighth place, Blues were a point off the Play-Offs on1st March and then six come the 30th. Two wins over Yorkshire teams, at Barnsley and home to Sheffield United were the only wins as Blues picked up eight points in total.

Blackpool 2-0 Southend
Southend 2-2 Fleetwood Town
Walsall 1-0 Southend
Southend 0-1 Oldham Athletic
Wigan Athletic 4-1 Southend
Southend 0-1 Bradford City

After beating Sheffield United at the end of March, Blues were to go the rest of the campaign without a win. Five defeats and one draw in April extinguished any hopes of the top six.

Bury 3-2 Southend

Blues ended the season with defeat to Bury and ended the campaign in 15th place, however with Bury found to have fielded an ineligible player, and subsequently deducted three points, Blues moved up to 14th.

Southend 1-3 Gillingham
Southend 1-3 Gillingham (EFL Cup)
Port Vale 2-0 Southend
Sheffield United 0-3 Southend
Southend 1-1 Bristol Rovers
Southend 0-2 Fleetwood Town
Southend 2-0 Brighton & Hove Albion (Checkatrade Trophy)

A disappointing start to the 2016/17 season with back-to-back defeats and elimination from the EFL Cup, it was at Brammall Lane Blues got their season up and running with a fantastic performance and a 3-0 win.

Bolton Wanderers 1-1 Southend
Scunthorpe 4-0 Southend
Southend 3-1 Millwall
Northampton Town 4-0 Southend
Southend 2-1 Oxford United

Things didn’t really pick up in September for Blues despite another good result at the Macron Stadium to start the month. Disappointing results on the road at Scunthorpe and Northampton had Blues towards lower end of Sky Bet League One.

Southend 1-1 Peterborough
Southend 1-0 Leyton Orient (Checkatrade Trophy)
Rochdale 3-0 Southend
Southend 1-0 Chesterfield
Bradford 1-1 Southend
MK Dons 3-0 Southend
Southend 1-1 Shrewsbury Town

It was October when Blues in their current guise really got things moving. After a 3-0 defeat to Rochdale, Blues went to Bradford and got a draw before a scintillating performance at MK Dons.

Millwall 1-0 Southend (FA Cup)
Stevenage 4-0 Southend (Checkatrade Trophy)
Bury 1-4 Southend
Southend 3-0 Bradford
Southend 1-1 Swindon
Walsall 0-0 Southend

Blues continued their record of going through November unbeaten in the league but did fall out of the FA Cup with a narrow defeat to Millwall. Notable wins away to Bury and at home to Bradford, whilst scoring seven times in those games, are two standout perfromanes.

Southend 3-1 Coventry
Oldham Athletic 0-2 Southend
