SIGNING | Nile Ranger signs for Blues until the end of the season

3 August 2016

Striker signs contract at Roots Hall until the end of 2016/17 after a successful trial period.

Southend United are pleased to announce the signing of striker Nile Ranger on a deal until the end of the season, with the option of a further year.

The former Newcastle United player spent a one-month trial period at the Club in July and has now been offered renewed terms for the coming season.

The striker began his career on Tyneside making 62 appearances for Newcastle. During his time at the club, he spent a period on loan at Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday - helping the latter achieve promotion from League One in 2012.

As the promotion race between the Owls and neighbours Sheffield United went down to the wire, Ranger stepped up to score against Wycombe Wanderers on the last day of the season to seal a 2-0 win and promotion back to the Championship.

Ranger left Newcastle for Swindon in 2013 and scored 10 goals for the Robins before moving to Blackpool in August 2014.

Manager Phil Brown was happy to add the ability of Nile to the squad and hopes he can offer something different and ultimately be a match winner at Roots Hall.

“There’s two or three reasons why we’ve chosen to extend Nile’s deal.” Brown said.

“First and foremost there is a footballer in there which we identified at the start and that’s the reason he came through the door on trial.

“Secondly we have a contract that safeguards us as a football club, but also safeguards Nile if he keeps his nose clean and performs well on the pitch.

“But the bottom line is, he’s come in as an option up front which is totally different from what we’ve got at this moment in time in terms of playing style.

“Nile is a big number nine for me, he’s 6ft 3inches tall and is a big unit of a lad who can control the ball and play the kind of football that only some people can dream about.

“So if we can get that out of him next season, then we’ve certainly got a strike force to be reckoned with.”

Ranger will wear the number 50 shirt for the new campaign, which starts this 3pm this Saturday against Gillingham at Roots Hall - Get your tickets here!
