MATCH PREVIEW | Barrett looking to get off to a good start

4 August 2016

Club Captain previews Gillingham.

Southend United’s Club Captain Adam Barrett is raring to go as the Sky Bet League One season begins this weekend at Roots Hall against neighbours Gillingham.

Saturday’s 3pm kick off will see Blues get back down to business after a successful pre-season and Phil Brown’s side will be looking to take that form into domestic matters.

Barrett, who will lead the team out on Saturday is ready to go again and kick off the season with a win in front of a bumper crowd on home turf.

“You get to this sort of stage of pre-season now where you want the business stuff to start.” Barrett said.

“Me personally, I’m not a massive fan of the pre-season games whereas Saturday there is a proper edge to the fixture and I can’t wait to get started.

“The first game always has that little extra bit of excitement where both fans are expecting their team to do well and the players are expecting to have a good season.

“With it being a local derby I’m sure Gillingham are going to bring a fair few down and our support at Roots Hall has always been tremendous so I’m looking forward to getting started.

“You want to get off to a good start, I think it’s important to get that first win under your belt to settle everyone down.

“We have naturally, ever since I’ve been here, been quite slow starters, so we want to get off to a fast start and get points on the board.

“So it’s a big game Saturday being a local derby and I’m sure the atmosphere will be great, but if we can get them three points it just calms everyone down and we can just concentrate on the rest of the season.”
