Blues Boss gives his reaction to Southend United's EFL Cup exit at the hands of Gillingham.Southend United Manager, Phil Brown felt strength in depth was the difference between his side and Gillingham in the 3-1 EFL Cup defeat at Roots Hall on Tuesday night.
As they did on Saturday, Blues started the brighter and took the lead as Stephen McLaughlin, the Southend scorer on Saturday, prodded home to put his ahead at the break.
But three second half goals for Gills courtesy of Cody McDonald and an eye-catching brace from second half substitute Jay Emmanuel-Thomas ensured it was the Kent side who made it to Round Two.
And Brown felt Gillingham’s game changing substitution of Emmanuel-Thomas was the deciding factor in this one.
“Quite simply they were better than us when one man came off the bench.
“They had Emmanuel-Thomas that started the game last Saturday and he was the difference between the two teams then and he was certainly was again tonight.”
“Up until that moment we’d enjoyed a little bit of play and a couple of chances, but it’s the same old story.
“In front of goal we weren’t ruthless enough and defensively we weren’t ruthless enough.
“It’s the lack of quality and depth of the squad that was the difference tonight and it will be for the rest of August until we get players in.”
