BROWN | Gills cup clash 'an important game'

Blues Boss looking for a reaction in the EFL Cup.

Southend United Manager, Phil Brown is hoping his side can bounce back from their weekend’s defeat to Gillingham with a win against the same opposition at Roots Hall in the EFL Cup tomorrow night.

Blues are preparing to host the Gills again after falling to a 3-1 defeat at home in their first league fixture of 2016/17 at the weekend.

Brown, disappointed with his team’s second half performance last Saturday, is hoping for a reaction in this cup clash.

“I think it’s a case of bouncing back from our second half performance as opposed to our first half performance.” He said.

“They got away with three points on Saturday with three shots on target and three goals and that for me signals alarm bells.

“The other part was two set-pieces which is something we’ll be looking to arrest before it’s a big problem and that’s what we’ll be working at today and tomorrow with regards to another game.

“It’s an important game because the downside to any season is that if you don’t get your first win until three/four/five games in then people start to get a little bit nervous.

“So tomorrow night is an important game where we’ll have to put our best foot forward and try and win the game; forget about the cup competition it’s about winning the game full stop.”
