O'Neill, Leonard and Hurst feature for U21'sSouthend United’s Under 21 side went down 3-1 against Luton Town at Boots and Laces on Wednesday afternoon.
The Hatters were quick out the traps with Blues goalkeeper Ted Smith making two vital stops before the away side took the lead through Alex Atkinson.
Southend reacted well, and levelled midway through the first half when Kevan Hurst volleyed home from 20 yards.
However, Luton regained the lead at the start of the second half when Isaac Galliford found the net after capitalising on a defensive error.
The Hatters then gave themselves breathing space from the spot through Zane Barton, which completed the scoring in a game which involved first team players, Luke O’Neill, Kevan Hurst and Ryan Leonard.
Under-21 Coach, Kevin Maher felt the younger players will have gained great experience from playing with members of the senior squad.
“We had a mixture of players in the starting line-up and the first team players out there showed great attitude,” said Maher.
“Their work-rate was first class and the young players can look at that and see how they should apply themselves.
“It’s a big learning curve for our players but they’ve seen what it takes to get into the first team here.
“The work-rate has to be the same every week no matter what.
“Lenny and Kevan Hurst set the standards with their application out there and that’s what the youngsters need to aspire to.”
