REPORT | Southend United v Oldham AthleticSouthend United were defeated 1-0 by Oldham Athletic at Roots Hall on Tuesday evening.
A Curtis Main strike midway through the second half was enough to give the Latics all three points and condemn Blues to back-to-back defeats.
Phil Brown made one change to the starting eleven for the game against Oldham Athletic at Roots Hall on Tuesday Evening.
John White who had out been out with illness at the weekend, came in for Will Atkinson as Blues switched to a 4-4-1-1 formation.
The game started off at a fast pace with Jonathan Forte hitting the woodwork for the visitors inside the first minute of the game.
Oldham went close again on 9 minutes, when a low Holmes-Dennis drive nearly zipped into the far bottom-right corner after a deflection off Barrett in the area.
Blues first chance of the game arrived on 15’ as Jack Payne curled one towards the top right after a well-worked short corner. Coleman was equal to the challenge however, and palmed it away for a corner.
From the resulting set piece Barnett went close as his narrowly missed with a header after connecting with McLaughlin’s ball.
Fresh from his previous attempt, Holmes-Dennis had another go just after 20 minutes, but he could only blaze over from 12-yards.
Worrall perhaps should have done better when he evaded the offside trap on 27’ The winger with only keeper Coleman to beat smashed over.
Worrall was to go close again on the half-hour mark, but Coleman makes a great stop to deny him this time.
Blues were now starting to crank the pressure up before the break; Barnett was denied an almost certain goal with a last ditch tackle from Edmundson in the box.
The frontman went even closer from the resulting corner, beating Coleman with his head but not Dummigan who cleared off the line on 31’.
Blues were certainly creating the chances, with both Barrett and Payne going wide of the target.
Payne showed quick feet to get away from his marker on 39’ before unleashing a shot which Coleman had to have two bites at gathering.
Barrett next to go closest before the interval, connecting with the cross with a header which Coleman got down well to stop.
Half Time: Southend United 0-0 Oldham Athletic
Blues were quickest out the traps as Worrall raced down the right flank, picking out Barnett with a low cross into the box who poked it wide of the target.
Payne nearly turned provider on 55’ when he cut in from the left. The playmaker fizzed a shot which deflected off Leonard and came within a whisker of the near post.
It was all Blues has the game struck the hour mark as Phil Brown’s side piled the pressure on the final third.
That made the home side vulnerable to the counter though, and they were almost made to pay and Forte raced clear. With Main seemingly the better option, the striker went alone, and Bentley got down well to save the strike to his left.
The Blues didn’t read the warning signs and they were made to pay and Payne was dispossessed in the middle by Dieng.
Main was played through on the right by the Frenchman, before playing a neat one-two with Forte before hitting a first time finish past Bentley to put Oldham one up.
Loza was brought on in a bid to get back in to the game on 75’ as he replaced McLaughlin.
White put his head towards one at the far post on 76’ but it was dealt with comfortably by Coleman.
Oldham looked to make it two with ten minutes to go when a teasing cross from Dummigan was almost tapped home by Main. Luckily the striker was offside anyway.
Thompson then gave way for McQueen with five minutes to play as Blues prepared to throw the kitchen sink at it.
Former Blues player Jake Cassidy, on as a sub for the Latics pehaps should have sealed it on 87 as he rounded keeper Bentley after being played in.
Cassidy perhaps overthought the effort and ran into trouble before being disposed as he tried to tee it back to croft.
The same player had another guilt edged chance two minutes later as a ricochet fell into his path and allowed him to charge towards goal.
With the goal gaping, the Blues defence made up ground well and Coker challenged before Cassidy could inflict any more damage.
