Blues bow out of the Under-21s Premier League Cup following defeat at Exeter City.
It was a bad night for the Southend United under-21s yesterday evening as the Blues suffered a comprehensive 6-0 defeat at Exeter City.
The Under-21 Premier League Cup clash took place at Exeter's St James Park, with Exeter having the better of the early stages in Devon.
But it took 25 minutes to break the deadlock, with the Grecians' Ollie Watkins scoring his first of the evening, smashing past Blues 'keeper Ted Smith.
Ten minutes later and Exeter had a second goal, as Matt Jay scored from close range following a blocked strike, before half time came.
It stayed at 2-0 until 20 minutes of the match remaining, when Danny Butterfield's side upped the gears and scored a few more goals to make the game safe.
Watkins added a second and completed his brace, before Jordan Moore-Taylor headed home a cross five minutes later.
Jamie Reid converted a fifth goal from the penalty spot, and there was still time for a sixth goal for the hosts, with Jay completing the victory.
