Under-21s manager reflects on pulsating 5-3 win against the Dons.
Southend United U21s manager Dave Robertson was pleased with his side's work as the under-21s defeated AFC Wimbledon U21s in a pulsating 5-3 win.
Jason Williams bagged twice for the Blues on the day, and Robertson was pleased with the performance from his team.
“It was a good result and one that we needed,” Robbo reflected.
“There should have been goals in the first half, Josh Bexon saved a penalty and we had a goal ruled out as well.
“It was a tight game but after five minutes of the second we were 3-0 up and created chances. We went 4-0 up but a crazy five minutes later it was 4-3. I changed the system and we got a fifth which ensured our two-goal advantage.”
And Robertson believes mixing the younger players with first team members will be vital for their development.
“Conceding three took gloss off what was otherwise a very pleasing performance, defensively we need to improve. Saying that, I was delighted with the attacking play, the goals and the chance creation.
“We approached the game the right way and I was pleased with Jason getting two goals. We got out of it exactly what we deserved and it was an important part of the young lads' development in playing with the more experienced players,” he concluded.
