Match Report: Southend United 0-0 Wigan Athletic

28 November 2015

Stalemate in windy conditions against the Latics at Roots Hall.

Played in windy and cold conditions, both Southend United and Wigan Athletic played out a 0-0 draw at Roots Hall in Sky Bet League 1.

A game of few chances, Blues' best came in the first half when Ryan Leonard his the bar, whilst for the Latics, Leon Barnett had an attempt denied in each half.

Blues boss Phil Brown made one change to the starting XI against the Latics, and it was an enforced one due to injury.

David Worrall missed out following a head injury picked up against Oldham Athletic on Tuesday evening, with Glen Rea coming in for the winger.

This resulted in Will Atkinson moving to a familiar wing berth, with Rea slotting in alongside Ryan Leonard in central midfield.

It was a bright start from the Blues, who managed to get a foothold in the game early on against a Latics side which included former Southend man Alex Revell in their XI.

And after seven minutes it was in form Leonard who crashed a shot against the crossbar after a well worked low corner by Ben Coker.

Wigan offered little in the opening half an hour and after Kevan Hurst's strike was blocked, Jack Payne tested Jussi Jaskelainen from the follow up, with the Fin grabbing at the second attempt.

The Latics did find their rhythmn though and on 37 minutes a combination of Dan Bentley and Will Atkinson denied Leon Barnett from giving the visitors the lead when he prodded Max Power's corner towards goal.

After the break, the visitors came out of the blocks the quickest and Bentley had to be alert to tip over another effort from Barnett on 50 minutes.

At the other end, skipper John White got on the end of a ball in the box and slammed just wide of Jaaskelainen's left-hand post on 64 minutes as both sides searched in a bid to break the deadlock.

Time was ticking if this was to happen, and Jack Payne went close to doing so with just under 20 minutes left as his cross-shot agonisingly went across the six-yard box and wide of the target.

Brown made his first change of the game with 14 minutes of the fame remaining, throwing on Joe Pigott in place of Will Atkinson in a bid to find a winner.

Moments later and Adam Barrett produced a sensational block to stop Powe's strike from testing Bentley from the edge of the box.

Wigan substitute David Perkins attempted to catch out Bentley at his near post with a shot that tested the Blues stopper with just five minutes of the game remaining.

Another substitute – Craig Davies – smashed wide after a one-two with Revell just a few minutes later before Barnett again caused havoc and hit the bar with the last kick of the match as a game of few chances petered to an end, with both sides earning a point for their efforts.

Blues: Bentley; White (c), Thompson, Barrett, Coker; Atkinson (Pigott, 76), Leonard, Rea, Hurst; Payne; Mooney.

Unused substitutes: T. Smith, Prosser, Bolger, O'Neill, Williams, Bridge.
