A section of the Ricky Duncan interview from the Charlton Athletic programme.
Southend United’s Academy Manager Ricky Duncan is delighted with what he’s seen from his troops during the early stages of pre-season.
Duncan’s side took on Luton Town the other week an drew 2-2 with the Hatters, and the youth chief is delighted with the progress the side are making both on and off the pitch.
“Pre-season is going really well and the understanding with the new players in the team is developing well, “Duncan says.
“We recently played three games against Championship youth teams.
“We have played Fulham, Nottingham Forest and QPR. All three clubs treated us brilliantly.
“We played some good football against Fulham and ended up winning 3-1. We lost 2-1 to Forest and we went to QPR with all first years and schoolboys, and won 3-1 last week. It’s been really good and it’s all coming together really nicely.”
So was there a difference in styles with the three opponents?
“All three teams were very good,” he admits.
“Forest were patient, whilst QPR were a good side as well. Fulham moved the ball really well.
“When you go to these clubs, they are top drawer. They look after us and you play on good pitches.
“We took our under-16s up to Nottingham. The coach driver was sick and we got there late. The lads dealt with it really well, as it was an eventful trip there, to say the least!
“All the boys at the moment in the youth and under-16s are showing some good bits and looking good, as we get ready for early August.
