Goalkeeper to combine playing and coaching duties.
Southend United can announce that Paul Smith has signed a new one-year deal with the Club.
The Blues 'keeper will combine playing duties with coaching the other Southend stoppers and is delighted to remain at Roots Hall for another campaign.
“The Club have been very welcoming to me for the last three years and the manager was keen to get me on board for next season, which was really pleasing. Coaching has been something I've been doing unofficially at the Club for a little while now.
“I've been doing it on the training pitch and on matchdays as well, alongside Terry Mason. It's been a good transition and is another step for me to take on the extra responsibilities. We have a strong goalkeeping unit here and that's shown with the goalkeeping performances and clean sheets over the last couple of years.”
And 35-year-old Smith – who's played in all four divisions in the Football League – is confident Blues can do well in the third tier next season.
“The Club have been good to me over the years and we're all really looking forward to the challenge in League 1, which is a very strong division.”
