Mooney bags first Blues goal, but it isn't enough.
New signing David Mooney netted his first goal for Southend United, but it wasn't enough, as Simeon Akinola's brace earned Braintree Town a 2-1 win at Cressing Road.
The hosts took the lead after 20 minutes, as Akinola latched on to a Michael Cheek knock down, to hammer a left-footed half-volley past Ted Smith and into the corner of the net.
At the other end, young Blues centre back Dan Matsuzaka headed down a David Worrall free kick, but the ball bounced off the turf and into the gloves of Nathan McDonald in the Iron goal.
And with just seconds of the half remaining, Michael Sheek somehow skewed his header over the bar after a deep Akinola cross, before the referee blew for half time.
There were no changes for Southend after half time, and just before the hour mark, the hosts added a second goal, thanks to that man Akinola again.
A sweeping move set Dan Sparkes free on the left-hand side, his low cross was dummied by Cheek, and Akinola smashed home from close range past Smith.
Phil Brown changed the whole team – like he said he's do – on the hour, with 11 new faces entering the game at Cressing Road.
With just over 15 minutes remaining, Blues were awarded a penalty. A well executed pass by substitute Gary Deegan saw Mooney latch onto the pass and flick the ball over an opponent before being dragging to the turf.
He stepped up, and slotted into the corner of the net to score his first goal for the Club.
After the changes, Blues were the better team, but it was to end, 2-1 to Braintree.
