Anthony aiming for an exciting season at Roots Hall.
New Southend United Anthony Wordsworth believes exciting times are ahead at Roots Hall after he joined the Club today.
The 26-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-year deal, with the midfielder bringing a wealth of League 1 experience to the Southend squad.
Beginning his career with Colchester United, Wordsworth spent the second half of last season in the third tier with Crawley Town on loan.
And he was pleased to finally get the deal done with Blues, and is looking forward to playing his part for our return to League 1.
“I've been talking to the Club for probably three weeks and we've finally got the deal done today,” Wordsworth said. “I'm really excited at joining the Club.
“I can play anywhere in midfield and I'm happy to play anywhere, even up front.
“I like to get forward and attack. I enjoy getting in the box to score goals and creating for others. I know League 1 well having spent five years at Colchester and I'm looking forward to playing for Southend.”
And the ex-Ipswich Town playmaker admits that some current Southend players and Phil Brown were persuasive.
“I met Phil (Brown) about three weeks back and I decided straight away that I wanted to play for him. I spoke to some of the boys I already know here and they spoke really highly of the Club.
“I know some of the boys here already and they spoke really highly of the Club. I know some of the other lads as well and I'm looking forward to starting here. It always helps knowing players here and I've watched a few Southend games because of those players.
“I have family that live in Southend and they come to all the games. I'll have to set some targets in pre-season and try and achieve those goals.”
And having spent the majority of his career as a Colchester player – appearing over 150 times for the U's – Wordsworth says that the Essex derby should be a cracker next season!
“I'm looking forward to that one. It should be a good, exciting game, I'm glad that was brought up!”
