Will looks ahead to the sixth vs. seventh battle against Plymouth Argyle in Sky Bet League Two
Southend United midfielder Will Atkinson is delighted to be back in the Blues starting XI, and is aiming to keep his place when one of his former sides visit Roots Hall on Saturday – Plymouth Argyle.
Will spent a period of time at Argyle on loan from Hull City back during the 2011-12 season – playing 25 games for the Greens - and says he learnt a lot during his time at Home Park.
“I really enjoyed my time down at Plymouth. It’s a good place,” the 26-year-old says, ahead of the sixth vs. seventh place battle in Sky Bet League Two.
“It’s going to be a tough game, but hopefully, due to the fact they’re just behind us, it could mean they come at us a bit more than other sides.
“We have to find ways to combat sides that come to Roots Hall and trying to stop us playing.
“We beat a lot of the top sides last season and we seem to thrive when the big games come around.
“It’s great to be back playing and involved, which I have been around the Christmas period. There’s a lot of quality, particularly in midfield. Now it’s about me keeping my spot."
Blues have only suffered one defeat in their last ten games, and Atkinson believes Southend are well set heading into the second half of the season.
“We’re in a good position at the moment and with January around, the manager will be aiming to bring in some players. Any help will be good, as we all want to achieve promotion.
“In terms of our goalscoring, it’s a team thing and we all need to chip in, all over the pitch.”
