Under-21s: Blues suffer narrow defeat against AFC Wimbledon

Egli Kaja's goal the difference in Merstham.

Egli Kaja’s goal proved the difference as Southend United’s under-21s suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat at AFC Wimbledon in Merstham earlier today in a re-arranged clash.

The Final Third Development game was due to be played yesterday before being called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

This meant a quick turnaround and the game was played earlier today in Surrey.

The Dons included the likes of first team players Ade Azeez and Tom Elliott.

Elliott put the ball through to Kaja, who slotted home in the first half, and that proved to be the difference on an overcast day.

Maher said: “We struggled a little bit early on as Wimbledon had a couple of first team strikers in their team and it took us a while to get to grips with us.

“After that we played some great stuff and it was unfortunate we just couldn’t nick the goal we needed to get a result.”

Blues: Bexon, Jordan Williams, Matsuzaka, Kyprianou, Adeyeye, Gard, Norman, Bridge (Johnson), Cotton, Scott, Jason Williams (Walker)
