Phil Brown laments silly mistakes

Phil Brown looks back on the defeat to Millwall

“Quite simply they were the better team, no doubt about it; I think we contributed to our own downfall making silly little mistakes.

“The professionalism and attitude from the Millwall players was to come here and not get beat.

“We gifted them the three goals in the first half, you try and change things tactically in the second half but the fourth goal was another silly mistake.

“It was one of them days, we had two of them last year when we lost to Stevenage & Wycombe and we’ve had another one here, it hurts, if you’re a Southend United player you’re hurting.

When asked if sticking with the same team played a big part after playing two games in 48 hours, Phil certainly didn’t think so.

“No I don’t think it was, anyone in the stadium can see there was effort and determination from the players.

“It’s unusual for us to concede so many, that’s why it’s really hurting especially after receiving a lot of plaudits recently, we now go back to basics and start again.

“We made changes at half time to try and get our way back into it but we didn’t change our mentality unfortunately.

“I thought the ball was clearly out of play in the build up to their second goal and I thought the referee played a big part in the game but at the end of the day we weren’t good enough.”
