Phil Brown gives his Millwall JPT verdict

Southend United boss Phil Brown gives an honest assessment of the Blues' defeat to Millwall in the JPT

“It’s not just the case that we are knocked out of a trophy it was our local rivals in town buoyed by a strong following which were making a lot of noise after scoring two goals, it’s disappointing and if the players are feeling like I am then they will be down

“It’s a lesson for them, they need to be more resolute in the middle of the field and they need to be more clinical in front of goal and that wasn’t evident enough today which is why we didn’t come out of the match with a win

“You can question systems but they’ve served us well in the last four or five games, if you’re not resolute and defending stronger then you aren’t going to win those games

“I need better quality in the final third, I need the strikers to be more clinical in front of goal like Millwall were and that was the difference this evening

“You’ve got a very difficult game up there against Bradford on Saturday, in front of a big crowd; we had that last against Sheffield United which was a very good performance

“I’m buoyed by the fact I’ve got three or four players coming back from injury so it’s a great opportunity for us to bounce back with a victory”
