Jack Payne: We were sloppy and were punished by Walsall

16 August 2015

Midfielder 'surprised' after Blues struggled to find their stride against the Saddlers.

Southend United midfielder Jack Payne was 'surprised' that Blues struggled to get going after bright displays in the opening two competitive games of the season against Fleetwood Town and Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Blues suffered a rare home defeat in the opening home league game of the season against Walsall, with goals from Tom Bradshaw and Sam Mantom proving the difference at Roots Hall.

“We've done well in the last couple of games and were unlucky not to win both the games at Fleetwood and against Brighton. We just didn't start well against Walsall,” the Southend number ten said.

“We were punished. I was surprised with how we performed. I was also surprised to get on so early but I  think I took the opportunity. I had to try and change things for the team.

“We had to make sure we got to half time just 1-0 down, with the second goal coming just after half time.”

But Payne is keen to ensure Blues' heads don't drop – especially with a long trip to Doncaster Rovers on the horizon on Wadnesday night.

“It was an off day. We were bad and have to put things right. We need to start afresh on Wednesday and put the result against Walsall behind us.”
