Match Preview: Southend United vs. Newport County

14 April 2015

A match preview ahead of the clash against the Exiles at Roots Hall.

The Lowdown...

Blues take on Newport County for the penultimate home match of the regular season, knowing that a clean sheet will mean a record-braking moment for goalkeeper Dan Bentley.

The Southend number one could keep an 11th consecutive home league clean sheet to break Mervyn Cawston's 34-year-record.

Our opponents have had an excellent campaign so far and sit just outside the play-off places.

And they're dangerous on their travels too, having gone to the likes of Wycombe Wanderers, Bury and Burton Albion and won.

The Officials...

Referee: Rob Lewis
Assistant Referee: Carl Fitch and Matt Foley
Fourth Official: Darren Blunden

They said what?!...

Phil Brown: “They play three centre backs, five in midfield and have pace up front. They have one or two individuals that can win a game. They are resilient and that's one thing we have to battle against. We have four clean sheets on the bounce and at the right time in the season. It's about results now, not pretty football.”

Jimmy Dack: “We will be positive and look to win the game and there is no reason why we shouldn’t. We’ve won at Bury, Wycombe and Burton and drawn at Shrewsbury, so we should head there with confidence and belief that we can get the result we need.”
