News: Youth Academy Day on Saturday

26 September 2014

Following the success of last season’s Academy Day, it will be returning to Roots Hall for Southend United’s Sky Bet League 2 fixture against Shrewsbury Town on Saturday 27th September, 3pm.

The day will give Southend United supporters the opportunity to find out more about the Academy and show their appreciation for the work that is being done to help support the club’s future.

Before the game, youngsters from the club’s Academy will be out on the pitch in the four corners of the ground, before all the players will be paraded around the pitch at half-time.

The Academy received Category Three status this summer following their EPPP audit, and has recently seen the likes of Jack Payne and Daniel Bentley become first-team regulars, while Ted Smith has gained international recognition with England.

To celebrate that success, Chief Executive Steve Kavanagh is hoping supporters turn out in force to back not only the first-team against the Shrews, but also the youngsters in the Academy.

He said: “We have a fantastic Youth Academy at Southend United which deserves the recognition and support of the fans at Roots Hall. Last season it was a great day that really raised the awareness and we aim to do exactly that again this season.

“Ricky Duncan and his staff do a fantastic job in bringing players through to the first-team, with the likes of Daniel Bentley and Jack Payne doing so well this year.

“Already this season the Shrimpers Trust have continued their sponsorship of the Academy, while members of the Blues Lottery helped raise another £10,000 which was handed over to Ricky at the start of the campaign.

“This day gives us an opportunity to celebrate that work, while also giving supporters the chance to see just how big and impressive our Youth Academy really is.”
