Southend United manager Phil Brown admitted his side 'weren't good enough' after suffering a defeat to Luton Town in Sky Bet League Two.
Goals by Alex Lawless and Mark Cullen in the first half sealed a valuable win for Luton but for Blues, it's now two consecutive defeat.
“We were outplayed in the first half and one or two weren't prepared for what Luton threw at us,” Brown admitted after the game at Kenilworth Road.
“I made a mistake in not playing Jack Payne to be honest. The damage was done by the time I brought Jack on at half-time and credit to Luton, they played very well and deserved their victory. They were better than us.
“They're up there for a reason and they are in a good period of form as well. The mentality of the team wasn't right today for one reason or another and Luton exploited it.”
And Brown rued his luck following injuries to a couple of centre backs prior to the game against the Hatters.
Blues lost Luke Prosser and Mads Ibenfeldt to injuries in training yesterday and both missed out on the game against the Bedfordshire side.
“Spirit was what we were all about last season and that needs to be rekindled.
“We had a black Friday yesterday. Luke Prosser picked up an injury to his calf yesterday and Mads Ibenfeldt now has a hairline fracture in his metatarsal. During the first half Cian Bolger picked up and injury and Lenny (Ryan Leonard) had to be thrown into the back four.
“It wasn't a good day at the office on Friday and it seemed to carry on today. We didn't have enough quality today.”
