Match Preview: Southend United vs. Exeter City

17 October 2014

We look ahead to Blues' Sky Bet League Two game against Exeter City at Roots Hall

The Lowdown

After a disappointing start to their season, Exeter City have picked up a good bit of form in recent weeks to haul themselves clear of the relegation spots somewhat.

The Grecians began their campaign with a good point against Portsmouth in a 1-1 draw, but then suffered consecutive defeats to local rivals Plymouth Argyle and Burton Albion.

City then drew with York and lost to Northampton and Mansfield before drawing with Oxford United.

However, Paul Tisdale's side finally earned their first win in Sky Bet League Two at the eighth time of asking as they beat Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium.

The win against the U's kickstarted the campaign and they followed this up with good victories over Tranmere Rovers, Bury and Dagenham & Redbridge.

This form led to Tisdale being nominated for the Manager of the Month Award for September, and Exeter then lost to Hartlepool United at home last week.

The Inside View

Phil Brown: “I want to see improvement from the Luton result. We’ve certainly worked on the mistakes and learned from them. Ryan Leonard will play some part in the game against Exeter. The players have to rely on each other when they go across the white line."

Paul Tisdale: “Both of the games when we’ve been there in the last couple of years have been very close and have been decided at the end of the game. I can remember Barry Corr scoring against us and a winner in the last five minutes two years ago, and then of course last year we won it ourselves.”
