Midfielder Atkinson wants to see 'confident bunch' play with freedom on Saturday
Southend United midfielder Will Atkinson insists confidence remains high in the camp despite Blues’ disappointing result in the FA Cup last week.
The 26-year-old believes the side played well against Mansfield Town last time Blues played in Sky Bet League Two and wants Southend to continue that form when Hartlepool United come to Roots Hall on Saturday.
“After the result on Saturday, the boys are chomping at the bit to get back out there and put in a good performance for the fans,” Atkinson said.
“It’s a big game but certainly no bigger than any other game.
“We’re still in seventh place and we did beat Mansfield last time in the league. We want to get a little run together again.”
Reflecting on the disappointment of last week, Atkinson wants Blues to learn and move on from the result.
And the versatile midfield man feels the pressure at Roots Hall is put on the players by themselves, as Southend aim to pick up all three points against Paul Murray’s Hartlepool side.
“It’s been a frustrating time for all of us. We’re a confident bunch though and hopefully we can transfer that onto the pitch.
“We know we’re a good team and we need to play with that confidence and freedom on Saturday.
“I love playing at Roots Hall. We put pressure on ourselves. We expect to put in good performances and results.”
