Youth team manager wants another big crowd for FA Youth Cup test against Barnet.
Southend United’s youth team coach, Dave Huzzey, is calling on the club’s fans to replicate the atmosphere created against Leverstock Green when Blues host Barnet in The FA Youth Cup Second Round.
A Roots Hall crowd of 383 backed the team to a 6-0 win over the non-league outfit in the First Round just ten days ago, and now Huzzey is targeting even more support when his team welcome the Bees.
“I’m looking forward to the match. It will be a great experience again for the boys. Hopefully we’ll get a few fans come down, because they were brilliant last time,” he said.
“I’d ask them to come down again and watch our young boys. It was a brilliant experience, and hopefully we’ll have the right outcome again this time.”
The two teams recorded a 2-2 draw at Boots & Laces in the Football League Youth Alliance South East Conference in late September, and Huzzey is expecting another difficult encounter with the prospect of a home Third Round tie against Middlesbrough for the victors.
“I’ve been to watch Barnet a couple of times; I went to watch them last Thursday and they’re a really good side. They might win the league this season, and they’ll certainly be in the top part of the table at the end of the season.
"I see them as a team who have some good individuals. They have a really good work ethic and they work hard for each other. If we can match that, then hopefully our quality will show,” he added.
“I’d like to see as many fans as possible at Roots Hall for this one. Our boys really thrive off the fans and the environment they create. The atmosphere in the Leverstock Green match was class, so if you can do that again, it would be much appreciated.”
Southend United host Barnet at Roots Hall in the Second Round of The FA Youth Cup at 7:30pm on Thursday evening. Admission is £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.
