Assistant manager says there may be a couple of new signings in time for home game against Northampton Town
Dave Penney admits there may be signings ahead of the loan window deadline, which shuts later today.
The Blues assistant manager insists that as Southend head into an important period, options are vital, with games coming thick and fast.
“We’re talking to a few players but nothing’s been done as yet,” Penney said.
“We’ve got some big games coming up with Christmas round the corner and we’ll need as many bodies as possible.
“Northampton have played 4-4-2 recently and the boy Ivan Toney may be going to Wolves, if reports are to be correct. We’ll get today out of the way and see who’s here and who’s not.”
Ahead of the game against the Cobblers, Penney says that although the term ‘never change a winning team’ is a famed cliché, Blues may not be able to do that, following Ryan Leonard’s injury against Tranmere Rovers last week.
“Lenny’s a big player for us and he’s probably 50/50 for the game against Northampton. It’s a shame for him because he’s just been getting back to form after his hamstring problem earlier in the campaign.
“He felt it after 35 minutes – it’s a groin strain. Conor Clifford came on for him, and although Lenny isn’t completely ruled out, we do have plenty of options in the middle of the park.
“We’re fully concentrating on the game against Northampton. It will be a difficult game against them but we’re in good form and confident.”
