Kevin Maher says Southend United will need to show their true character on Saturday as they look to get to Wembley for the League 2 Play-off final.
Maher was part of the successful play-off push in 2005, and says everyone's character shone through, having missed out on automatic promotion.
It's a different story this time around, but with Blues trailing 1-0 from the first leg, he says they must show their colours on Saturday against Burton Albion.
“You have to be full of character, because there’s a lot riding on it,” he said. “You do need that little bit of luck, but you’ve got to give it absolutely everything.
“I remember just missing out on automatic promotion, and it was hard to take, but we did show that character to respond in the play-offs and eventually win promotion.
“A couple of years ago it was a different story, but there’s a few players still here from that, and I’m sure that will stand them in good stead this time around.
“Freddy is one of those who has been involved in the play-offs, and risen to the occasion. I still remember his goal fondly, and I’m sure he’ll be one to use all his experience throughout the play-off games.”
