Brown: The planning for next season starts now

Phil Brown says the planning starts now for Southend United's new season

Phil Brown says decisions have got to be made straight away to ensure Southend United are a force to be reckoned with next season.

The players will be in on Tuesday to dissect a season which ended in disappointment, following the play-off defeat to Burton Albion.

Blues’ boss says he wants winners here next season, to create a winning environment and ultimately lead this club to glory.

He said: “We will be back in on Tuesday once the dust has settled and we will sit down and talk to the players and find out what their mentality is like.

“I want winners at this football club, players who want to be here so we can create a winning environment and a winning team.

“We don’t just want to feel how Burton are feeling at the moment, we want to feel what Rochdale, Scunthorpe and Chesterfield are feeling come the end of next season.

“There are decisions to be made straight away so it’s going to be a big pre-season for us to prepare for next year.”

Brown however is pleased to have the core of the team tied down for next season, with Dan Bentley, Ryan Leonard, Kevan Hurst and Ben Coker all signing new deals this season.

Barry Corr and Luke Prosser also signed deals last summer, and Brown says the recruitment this summer must be spot on to build on what is here this season.

He said: “We’ve got the nucleus of the team in place, and over this season we’ve added contracts to the players that we want to keep here.

“We also added last summer with Luke Prosser and Barry Corr signing new deals to come them here, some we’ve got the core to work from.

“The recruitment has now got to be good to make sure we’re a force to be reckoned with next season.”
