Southend United vs. Bury

15 March 2014

Report: Southend United 0-0 Bury

Ten-man Southend United were held to a 0-0 draw with Bury at Roots Hall on Saturday afternoon.

The major talking point of the match will be the red card Barry Corr received with less than 10 minutes remaining for an off the ball incident.

After a quiet opening 20 minutes Bury had the first real chance of the game after a defence splitting pass found Andrew Tutte who saw his cross parried away by Daniel Bentley with midfielder Danny Mayor's effort blocked in front of goal.

Blues had to wait until the 33rd minute to pressurise the Bury defence with Kevan Hurst advancing on goal from midfield before firing inches wide with a left footed effort.

The sides went in level at half time with neither team managing to register a shot on target with Bury frustrating the Southend attack.

With just over 50 minutes gone Southend missed a golden chance after Anthony Straker capitalised on lacklustre defending before setting up Freddy Eastwood in front of goal but the striker ballooned the effort over the bar.

The home side continued to look for the opener with Ryan Leonard heading wide Ben Coker's right wing cross after tenacious play from the defender gave him the opportunity to find the midfielder in the box.

With just under 10 minutes to go Southend were reduced 10 men after substitute Barry Corr was shown a straight red card for an off the ball incident involving Frederic Vesseli, Corr was clearly frustrated with the decision as he left the field of play.

Southend were unable to conjure up any clear chances with the winless streak extending to 12 games in all competitions.
