New Blues defender pleased with clean sheet on his debut for the club
It may have been a frustrating afternoon for all on Saturday, but one man certainly impressed, as he helped Blues pick up their 14th clean sheet of the season on his debut for the club.
Jakub Sokolik, who joined on Tuesday from Liverpool, and would possibly have made his debut against Scunthorpe United that night if it hadn’t been for bad traffic, was in from the start against Bury on Saturday.
The Czech defender put in a composed display alongside fellow loanee John Egan, and he was pleased on a personal note to make his debut, and keep a clean sheet.
Sokolik said: “It was nice to come into the team and to make my debut. I’m very pleased to be back playing and to come through the game, because I’ve not played much recently.
“On Tuesday it took me six hours from Liverpool and I was late for the game, but at least it gave me the chance to get to know the players better.
“I’m very happy to be at Southend United, and I am pleased to get off to a good start personally with a clean sheet.
“Of course it’s disappointing that we did not win the game, but I thought we were solid defensively throughout the game.
“I am staying in the same hotel as John Egan so we spoke on Friday night about what we expect from each other and we did well together.
“The back four all did very well and so did Daniel Bentley in goal. I was happy with my performance but now I want to help the team get back to winning.”
The defender felt Blues just hadn’t done quite enough going forward to break down Bury, who made it compact in the midfield.
Despite trying to get the ball out wide, Sokalik felt the final ball was missing on a number of occasions, and that cost Blues.
He added: “It was very busy in the middle of the pitch because they had extra men there, so we tried to get the ball out wide.
“We did that quite a lot but the final ball just wasn’t quite there. A few times we got into good positions but couldn’t find the right pass or cross.
“We just need to try and work at that and the goals will come, but we were solid defensively so hopefully we can build from there.
“I just really want to help this team get up the table and win football matches. It was a good start for me today and I think there’s a lot more to come from me and the team.”
