Blues legend Kevin Maher back with Blues, coaching youngsters in the club's academy
Southend United legend Kevin Maher is back with the club – coaching youngsters in the academy.
Maher, who spent ten years at Roots Hall between 1998 and 2008, is coaching a couple of nights at week for Ricky Duncan’s academy.
The midfielder is still playing football part-time, but is also looking to gain his coaching badges.
He got in touch with Duncan a couple of weeks ago and Blues’ Academy Manager was only too happy to have the 37-year-old on board.
Maher is delighted to be involved with the club again, and hopes he can help develop future talent at Southend United.
He said: “It’s been a while since I’ve been back to the club, but I’ve stayed in touch with Ricky and this was a great opportunity for me.
“I’m working to get my coaching badges so it’s a great chance to help out and try and develop some youngsters through the academy.
“I've got a great affiliation with Southend United, it’s a club that’s very close to my heart, so to help in anyway is great.
“Hopefully we all get something out of it. I’m learning all the time and coaching is something I want to go into.”
Duncan said: “It’s great to have Kevin working with us a couple of nights a week to pass on his excellent knowledge.
“He spent a number of years with the club and I’ve maintained a good relationship with him so it was a no brainer to bring him in.
“He’s working the coaching around his football still, but it’s great to have him around the place.
“Youngsters like Jack Payne remember watching him as they came through the academy.”
