Brown: The numbers game

10 March 2014

Phil Brown on Tuesday night's game against Scunthorpe United

Phil Brown says the numbers game suggests a win for Southend United is just around the corner, as well as a defeat for in-form Scunthorpe United.

Blues travel to Glanford Park to face the division’s most in form team, with Russ Wilcox’s men unbeaten in 19 games ahead of Tuesday night’s game.

On the other hand, Blues are without a win in ten games in all competitions, but Brown says both runs are there to be ended.

Blues’ boss said: “If you play the numbers game then a win for us and a defeat for them should be just around the corner.

“We know it’s not that simple and we’ve got to roll our sleeves up, get stuck in, and turn this around through hard work.

“It’s good to have this game so quickly after Saturday, but we’ve not just got to put that, and the previous nine games, behind us.

“The manager has done a great job, he’s taking the plaudits and he deserves to with their recent form.

“We’ve got to get on with the task of winning the game and doing whatever it takes to get that win.”

Brown believes the mentality of the players is the most important factor, heading into the game against the Iron.

“It’s all about the mentality and the attitude to go to Scunthorpe on a Tuesday night and perform to the best of their abilities,” Brown added.

“We’ve got to perform for 90 minutes. When Scunthorpe came to Roots Hall we were the better team for 60 minutes.

“But once they’d got the goal we weren’t good enough to get back in the game. We must be at it for the whole game.

“We’ve got to go there and roll our sleeves up and fight for the cause. If it’s not pretty, so be it.

“Set pieces could well be important, that will play our part in the game. We may have to ride our luck, but we’ve just got to put our best foot forward.”
