Brown: Stick together as a group

5 March 2014

Phil Brown wants everyone at Southend United to stick together as the season approaches its final 12 games

Manager Phil Brown has urged everyone connected with Southend United to come together as a group and help turn the club’s fortunes on the pitch round.

Blues’ boss has been delighted with the fans’ support so far this season, but says it’s now more important than ever that they get behind the players.

Brown said: “It’s all about Southend United fans coming together, with everyone else connected with the club, as a group, to support the boys that cross the white line on a matchday.

“That’s the most important thing. It’s no use being negative and giving the players, who are trying desperately to achieve what we set out to achieve, stick.

“The players are absolutely committed to the cause – I’d be worried and realise it if they weren’t, but they are, and they are committed to playing for Southend United.

“I hope the supporters can see that this run is not because of a lack of effort from the players.

“They need the support of the guy on the terrace every weekend to help them turn this form around as quickly as possible.”

Brown says Blues have accepted the plaudits from earlier in the season, and the recent criticism in equal measure, but truly believes he is seeing a group of players give absolutely everything.

He added: “We had a lot of plaudits earlier in the season, and building up to the game against Hull City when we lost just one in 15 games.

“We’ve had some criticism since and we have to accept that in equal measure, but I don’t believe for a second it’s down to a lack of effort.

“Our desire, endeavour, and the performances in most of these games have been worthy of wins, and for whatever reason we’ve just not been getting them.

“We will continue to work hard on the training ground, and for the 90 minutes every game, to put this right and turn things around.

“The players are giving it everything for you as supporters, me as their manager, the club itself, and themselves.”
